Dear Colleagues,

The Rhode Island Chapter of the NCMA would again like to thank all of you who attended the 2007 Industry Day in June. A number of you have inquired when the Industry Day Briefing package would be promulgated, and here is an update on that issue.

NUWC has cleared the briefings for release, but not for general public release. Therefore, the chapter will not be able to post them to our website as we had anticipated being able to do at the time of the event. Instead, as we did in 2005, we will mail a restricted-distribution CD-ROM to each registrant. We are in the process of preparing these and will be mailing them as soon as we can. Obviously, this has required some “retooling” on our part, and we appreciate your patience to date—and as we complete this task. In the meantime, if any attendee’s mailing address has changed in the past month, please let us know.

2007 NCMA RI INDUSTRY DAY

Industry Day 2007 was held at the Crowne Plaza, Warwick, RI on June 12. To broaden the scope of this year’s event, we partnered with the Department of Defense New England Regional Council and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. They hosted a New England-wide Match-maker event at the Crowne Plaza the day before Industry Day.

Industry Day was a day-long event that included presentations by NUWC Division Newport (NUWCDIVNPT) senior managers.  This year’s presentations covered technical information and NUWCDIVNPT long-range plans and strategies.  Prominent invited speakers included:  Dr. Paul Lefebvre, NUWC Technical Director and Mr. Donald F. McCormack, Technical Director, Naval Undersea Warfare Center.

Retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher Jr., Ph.D., graciously accepted our invitation to be the Keynote Speaker.  A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Vice Admiral Lautenbacher (RET) is serving as the Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. He was appointed Dec. 19, 2001. Along with this title comes the added distinction of serving as the eighth administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in applied mathematics.

Vice Admiral (RET) Lautenbacher oversees the day-to-day functions of NOAA, as well as laying out its strategic and operational future. The agency manages an annual budget of $4 billion. The agency includes, and is comprised of, the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Services; National Marine Fisheries Service; National Ocean Service; National Weather Service; Oceanic and Atmospheric Research; Marine and Aviation Operations; and the NOAA Corps, the nation’s seventh uniformed service. He directed an extensive review and reorganization of the NOAA corporate structure to meet the environmental challenges of the 21st century.
